I was once told oh it is poorly written on purpose you have to wait for book two for it to get good. I did not read the book.

Horrible take. You’ll miss out on the best books of all time with this mindset

I feel like... you get three chapters. If I'm not hooked by then, it's not the book for me.

what annoys me is when people recommend things saying it doesn't get properly good until so and so, despite it being great the whole time and they are just dettering the person from reading it

Heather Malone Katicich Author :
My prologue is world-building, but Chapter 1 drops right into the actual world and story. It IS a romance based fantasy, so Chapter 1 is more character driven, but thats the point. Why would you want to read a book about people you dont actually care about? My job in Chapter 1 is making a reader WANT to see what happens to these people.

My uncle said I needed to read until Eldest before the Eragon series got good. The entire first book is traveling and eating, maybe some magic. Theres barely anything in the book that is notable other than the latter half of the book. It was a chore to read it.

Listened to people about this once. Got to book two and it did not get better. I’ll never listen to that type of recommendation again

currently what I'm working on with my book. I wrote 5 chapters of content that could be stretched into 10 and my first chapter wasn't doing enough to connect the reader to the main character. so I'm re-working it all to be better.

If I have to slog through 1 or 2 books to get good you’re right I’m not reading it. I give a book 100 pages and if I’m not feeling it I dnf.

Fair. Everyone’s got their own takes. I’m willing to be patient as long as the pay off is worth it. But then again, I’m my own judgement on what’s worthy or not. What kind of books do you like?

I think if you do have a book style like that tho, you need to leak in the "higher quality"/"good" parts in the first or second chapter. like if you're searching for a treasure chest and find one or two gold coins early on the path so it lets you know you're going the right way

Totally agree on “wait till book 5.” No. I don’t think there is a chapter cut off for me. Either I’m into it or I’m not.

I wrote this story in boy camp and a lot of people liked it I just don’t know where to share it so I can see if people actually like it and if I should continue it yk

I hate when a book wastes my time. I even take an infodump, when it serves a purpose. Just don't waste my time, with convoluted prose that takes 5 chapters to make a point where a paragraph would suffice, just because the author wants to be mysterious. Secondary, tertiary, quaternary PoVs, that add nothing to the story, just offer a convenient cliffhanger.

@Yahudon Anatoreth: I be thinking it’s cap, because you don’t have to wait until a certain point for the story to be good. If you do, it’s just not good. Shit can be good and interesting from the first page. And honestly it has to be, in order to hook readers so they won’t want to put the book down
