Under Albania’s communist dictator Enver Hoxha, Catholicism was outlawed and priests were imprisoned, tortured and executed. Simoni was arrested in 1963 after celebrating Christmas Mass and sentenced to death. His sentence was commuted to 25 years of forced labor, much of it in the notorious Spaç prison. But the regime could imprison the priest—it could not imprison Christ. Simoni secretly celebrated Mass in prison, hearing confessions and distributing Communion despite the constant threat of death. After decades of persecution, he emerged without hatred, preaching forgiveness. Pope Francis made him a cardinal in 2016. His life exposes a simple truth: regimes rise and fall, ideologies collapse, but Christ remains—and His Church survives even in the darkest prisons.

He was born on 18 October 1928 in Troshan, Albania. He was ordained a priest on 7 April 1956. During the communist dictatorship, he was arrested and imprisoned for about 18 years, including periods of forced labor. He continued his priestly ministry after his release, even under difficult circumstances. Pope Francis made him a cardinal on 19 November 2016. Because he is over 80, he cannot vote in a papal conclave. He became particularly well known internationally for his testimony about the persecution of Catholics in communist Albania and his meeting with Pope Francis. He is widely regarded as a symbol of faith, perseverance, and the suffering of the Catholic Church in communist Albania.
