At the exact same time, an executive order waived tariffs to flood domestic markets with up to 300,000 metric tons of cheap foreign imported beef. Ranchers were promised protectionism. Instead, the stroke of an executive pen undercut domestic producers right when family ranches were finally recovering margins. This is the direct result of policies rural America overwhelmingly supported: 🔵 Tariff Wars and Retaliation: Years of trade disputes sparked retaliatory agricultural penalties that cost U.S. producers billions, drove Chapter 12 farm bankruptcies to historic highs, and shuttered over 160,000 American family farms while corporate mega-operations took the bulk of taxpayer bailouts. 🔵 The Meatpacker Monopoly: Four multinational conglomerates (Tyson, JBS, Cargill, National Beef) control over 80% of U.S. beef processing. Opposing antitrust enforcement and deregulation did not create freedom; it handed complete pricing control to corporate monopolies that keep retail grocery beef at $9 a pound while paying pennies at the farm gate. 🔵 The Middleman Spread: Shaming everyday working families for buying coffee while groceries skyrocket misses the point. The consumer is not setting cattle prices; the meatpackers pocketing record profit margins in the middle are. Slogans about freedom do not pay the feed bill or diesel costs.
