The verse is: رَبَّنَا لَا تَجْعَلْ فِي قُلُوبِنَا غِلًّا لِّلَّذِينَ آمَنُوا رَبَّنَا إِنَّكَ رَءُوفٌ رَّحِيمٌ video Credit: Dr Haifaa Younis “Our Lord, do not place in our hearts any resentment toward those who believe. Our Lord, surely You are Ever-Gracious, Most Merciful.” — Qur’an 59:10 The word غِلًّا (ghillan) refers to deep resentment, rancor, or ill-feeling held in the heart. And importantly, asking Allah to keep your heart clean doesn't mean allowing people to hurt you repeatedly. You can forgive someone while still keeping boundaries, distancing yourself, and protecting yourself from further harm. If someone has hurt you and you find yourself thinking, “I don't want to hate them, but I can't stop feeling hurt,” this dua is beautiful to repeat. You're essentially asking Allah: > “Ya Allah, don't let what people did to me turn my heart into something I don't want it to become.” You can also make the dua in your own words after it: “Ya Allah, heal my heart, remove resentment from it, forgive those who have wronged me, and protect me from being wronged again.” And remember: having a wounded heart isn't the same as having a bad heart.
