I remember when raspis were 35 and were the super cheap option

What’s making pi’s unappealing is they used to be a full computer for $30, but the price keeps rising while used hardware gets more and more inexpensive. Unless you have a genuine need for GPIO and a full OS, a pi just doesn’t make as much sense anymore.

My pi is running my local dashboard, portainer, and pihole.
The Dell mini pc I bought for the same price as the PI runs my media hosting, a SDR++ server for my nooelec, and my private WoW server with 2k bots.
Which is the better deal

People really forget the pi has always been a tinkerers toy. It was great when it came out (still is good for what it is, just now it's not the only tinker toy option out there).

I’ve been waiting years to do a pi project with Lennox. By the time I finally got in to a space to build a project and decided on the project…the raspberry pi gets expensive as hell. So now I’m going to use a 4gb ram android trac phone for $20.

I'm sure there are gpio solutions for those mini pcs

Pis used to be so so much cheaper. Now it’s just a hobbyist thing.

And there are CH340 usb-serial dongles that will give you i2c / gpio pins on regular Linux PCs..

You can just get an usb device with headers / IO pins. I do it all the time

The problem is that 99.99% of Pis have never had a single pin of their GPIO touched.
People buy the things because they're just following a project someone else did, so demand has skyrocketed, and then the atmosphere igniter bubble extending to buy all chip fab capacity forever just made it worse.

I agree, but one other appeal of the Pi is it uses much less power, however it doesn't makes much sense with how stupidly expensive they are now

Great bit of info here. Also if you needed a board with headers for sensors you could probably run a pi zero and then have your dell talk to it over the network.

The whole attraction of raspis was that they were like $40. They lost the plot 🤷♂️
