Follow along as I slowly share my story about postpartum psychosis. Postpartum psychosis should never be stigmatized as an illness that automatically makes a mother dangerous or means she will hurt her baby. The tragic cases we hear about are devastating, but they are not the story of every mother who experiences postpartum psychosis. Many women experience this illness, receive treatment, recover, and go on to continue loving and raising their children. But those tragedies should make us pay attention. They should make us talk about how real postpartum psychosis is. How quickly it can develop. How drastically it can alter a person’s perception of reality. And most importantly, how desperately mothers experiencing it need immediate medical care…not judgment, shame, or fear. We can acknowledge the unimaginable tragedies associated with postpartum psychosis without turning every woman who has experienced it into someone society should be afraid of. Postpartum psychosis is a serious medical emergency, but it is also treatable. Awareness matters. Education matters. Early intervention matters. And mothers need to know that experiencing postpartum psychosis does not define who they are as a mother. The goal shouldn’t be to make people fear postpartum psychosis.
