Every item listed was correct. Until the last one. Customer - 1 Price: PAID ⸻ I walked over to the cashier. “I think your machine’s broken.” She looked at the receipt. Her face drained of color. Then she asked, “Did it already thank you?” I nodded. Without another word… She locked the front doors. Turned the automatic entrance sign to CLOSED. And told every employee to step away from the registers. ⸻ The lights above the self-checkouts shut off. One by one. Except mine. The scanner beeped. Nobody was standing there. Another beep. Then another. As if someone invisible was scanning groceries. The total on the screen kept climbing. $14.72… $38.15… $91.64… Then… The payment was approved. No card was inserted. ⸻ The machine spoke. “Thank you.” A pause. Then… “Have a safe drive home.” I hadn’t driven there. I’d walked. The cashier slowly looked through the front windows. Parked directly outside… Was a car. Same color as mine. Same license plate. The driver’s seat was occupied. The person inside… Was staring directly at the store. They looked exactly like me.
