On August 21, 1986, a sudden, catastrophic natural phenomenon occurred at Lake Nyos, a deep volcanic crater lake in northwestern Cameroon. The weirdest evidence found by arriving rescue teams was that the livestock, insects, and 1,746 people had perished perfectly in place, many without ever waking up. The bizarre tragedy left only a few traumatized survivors who described waking up after passing out to find their entire families and villages dead around them. To prevent a repeating disaster, international scientists installed permanent, automated degassing tubes directly into the floor of Lake Nyos to slowly and safely siphon off the carbon dioxide before it can build up again. Evaluated through 2026, the case remains a completely solved but hauntingly unique natural catastrophe.
