This video is a response to something a follower asked me. And I have many more thoughts on the topic but some I can’t get into detail with due to censorship by algorithms. Something I didn’t mention in the video that I wanted to address was that in my reply to their comment I had added - “treat me like a human being worthy of respect and opinions like any other person.” I have it some thought and I’m not sure I need that as a pre-requisite to not be considered exploited in this context. While I obviously respect myself and consider myself equal to any other person, it’s not necessarily a validation or requirement I need from my consumers. Being in this contractual scenario that we enter in, I provide a product and you buy it. And that’s all there is to it really. A lot of people view my industry as something that provides entertainment and would prefer not to attach personhood to the media they consume. Which to me, is kinda relatable. I’m a consumer myself. I buy things from corporations I don’t admire or like, or I watch movies with actors I think are bad people but I consume the content because I don’t necessarily attach the art to the artist. And in a similar way, if my consumers don’t want to think about me in any manner other than a person who creates entertaining content, then that’s okay! I still think spewing unkindness onto a practical stranger online is weird behaviour. The parasocial hate relationship a lot of people have with creators online is still bizarre to me. I dislike a lot of things and people but I would never waste time actively harassing them. What do you think?
