No one on their death bed is thinking “I wish I optimized my workflow better.” They’re thinking about the spontaneous trip to Switzerland with their girl to frolic and play tennis. As someone who is like you, I understand it’s easier said than done, and it takes a lot of micro-exposure to fully engage in acts of hedonism without underlying feelings of guilt. As a physical therapist, I’ve seen soooo many people get to their 50s-60s and no longer have the health they once did in their 20s-30s to actually enjoy their investments / retirement money. Even those who took excellent care of themselves by eating right, exercising and managing stress well. They can’t tolerate sitting on a long flight to another country. They no longer have the endurance to experience the degree of tourism they saved their whole life for. Their regret is profound. This radically changed my mindset. The only difference between you and disability is time and luck. Life comes at you fast. The way your body experiences aging is unpredictable, and you can only control so much. For me personally, FIRE is the goal, but it’s balanced with splurging on experiences when it truly matters. If I’d regret not doing something on my death bed when my life flashes before my eyes, I do it. For example, my favorite band went on tour. I traveled to every show I could in various states. Then I kept myself in the house for the next two years to replenish what I spent lol. In essence: take the trip while you can.

Especially with AI now, what's the point of trying to be a super producer anymore; you can't beat the AI, so you may as well try to enjoy life. It's tough however for those of us who grew up valuing mental effort, making progress and solving things. Hedonists really don't value that stuff and for me it's hard to connect.

What do you do for big tech? Are you a valued engineer for the long run or in development adjacent/managerial role? If so you gotta optimize so that you can live a carefree life. The engineers can make enough money to retire, but the rain isn’t always gonna come for all the others. The pursuit of “hedonism” is funded by… funds. Get real brother
