Closely related to deadly nightshade and datura, the highly toxic and dangerous Brugmansia plant originates from South America. All parts of brugmansia are deadly poisonous. The night time fragrance is intended to attract night time pollinating moths. (Datura is similar to Brugmansia, it is known as devil’s trumpet and is a smaller herbaceous plant and the flowers point up.) Brugmansia is a larger multi stemmed shrub or small trees and the flowers hang down, and is known as Angel’s Trumpets. The plant contains highly dangerous tropane alkaloids like scopolamine and atropine. In Paris 2015, three people were arrested for using powder from brugmania plant to blow into tourists’ faces when asking for directions using a map. The powder rendered the victims compliant and unable to resist instructions. Some victims were even walked to their hotels and accommodation where they handed over their money and jewelry whilst in their hypnotic or zombie state. Brugmansia originates from tropical and coastal regions of South America including Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Chile, and Brazil. It is a tender plant, so needs to be grown in a large conservatory in cooler countries in most areas of the uk, although it can survive outside down here on the coast in south Devon. I filmed these brugmansia plants at Agatha Christie’s Greenway in Devon (where I was Head Gardener) and at Torre abbey in Torquay where they have a collection of potent or poisonous plants, based on Agatha Christie books.
