There are some losses that change you forever. Losing someone you love is not simply saying goodbye to a person; it is saying goodbye to a part of the life you once knew. The world continues moving after they are gone. The sun still rises, people still laugh, days still turn into nights—but somehow, everything feels different. There is an emptiness where their presence used to be, and no matter how much time passes, that emptiness never completely disappears.
Grief is strange because it does not follow a schedule. In the beginning, it can feel impossible to breathe beneath the weight of it. Every memory hurts. Every familiar place reminds you of them. Their name can bring tears before you even realize you are crying. You find yourself wishing for one more conversation, one more hug, one more ordinary day together. You would give anything to hear their voice again, even if only for a moment.
People often say that time heals all wounds. But I have learned that some wounds do not heal in the way people expect. Time does not erase the pain. It simply teaches you how to carry it. The grief becomes less visible, perhaps, but it never truly leaves. It settles quietly inside you, becoming a part of who you are.
There are days when I can almost forget that they are gone. I might laugh at something, become distracted, or get caught up in the ordinary things life demands. Then, without warning, something brings them back to me—a song, a photograph, a familiar scent, a place we once shared, or even a simple thought. For a moment, the distance between then and now disappears. I remember them exactly as they were, and then reality returns. They are gone. And that realization can hurt just as much as it did in the beginning.
What makes grief so painful is that it exists because love existed first. We grieve deeply because we cared deeply. The pain is the shadow left behind by something that once meant everything to us. If we could remove the grief completely, we might also be removing a piece of the love and memories that remain. So I have stopped wishing for a day when I will forget how much it hurts. I hope to learn how to live with it.
