I have an abusive narc mother. And until I’m able to get out, I have bring voice down all the time. Low, calm, light. Cannot be myself at all, or she uses it against you. Even when calm, expressionless, and quiet to the point of her not being able to tell if I’m angry or happy, she still finds reasons to be upset. But it’s the best option, and I feel the most in control of the situation and myself that way. Not bad advice at all. Good reminder.

So I actually think you shouldn’t say “you can’t talk to me like that” at all. You can’t control what others do, and when they provide you wrong you look really out of control, no matter the tone you use. Instead, say “if you continue to talk to me that way, I’ll… (insert the boundary)”. This puts you in control of your behavior, not theirs.
