@tiraofegypt: Today is August 22, but if we were living by the ancient Egyptian calendar, today would be 5the day of the month of Menhet, during the season of Akhet, the great season of inundation. Menhet was a month associated with Ptah, the ancient Egyptian creator god and patron of craftsmen, builders, and artisans. And according to surviving ancient Egyptian calendar traditions, Menhet 5 wasn't considered an especially lucky date. In fact, it was marked as a very adverse day. The ancient Egyptians didn't simply divide the year into months and seasons. Individual days could carry their own religious significance, with some considered favorable for beginning journeys, celebrations, or important work, while others were regarded as dangerous or unlucky because of mythological events believed to have occurred on those dates. It's one of the things I find so fascinating about the ancient Egyptian calendar. Their year wasn't just a way of measuring time. It connected everyday life with the Nile, the gods, mythology, agriculture, festivals, and the rhythms of the natural world.
