Hiring a fence contractor? Here are the top 3 unethical fence building principles I come across most recently frequently. 1. Not digging the fence post holes deep enough. Most building grade fences here in Texas might be one foot deep at best. Depending on your soil and your frost line will determine your hole depth. If you’re in the northern part of the USA you may very well need to go 4’ deep. 2. Not using pressure treated lumber. You’d think this is common sense, but I come across fences (and even decks) built with lumber meant for interior use only. 3. Do not use a landscaping timber as a fence post ! If your contractor is using this, they’re like the cheapest bid and also likely to cut corners in my first point (not digging holes deep enough). Most new builder grade homes in Texas have fences built with landscape Timbers, when it even states on the product “NOT FOR STRUCTURAL USE”. Honorable mention for next slightly unethical practice is contractors using the wrong fasteners. I’ve come across fence pickets secured with drywall screws 🤦🏽‍♂️ Let me know your thoughts in this list !
