What gets me about the whole “you’re in America, speak English” attitude is that it ignores both history and the rest of the world. People came here from Germany, Italy, Poland, France and countless other places and built entire communities where their native languages were spoken. And there were already people living here long before English-speaking Europeans arrived.
Meanwhile, in many other countries, being bilingual or multilingual is completely normal. Some people speak two, three, even four languages, while a lot of us in the U.S. only speak English. If anything, I’m embarrassed that I don’t speak another language. I’ve tried, and it’s hard for me, but I would love to be able to communicate with more people.
And please stop assuming that every time people are speaking another language, they’re talking about you. 😂 Most of the time, they’re just having a conversation that has absolutely nothing to do with you. I once told a woman from Mexico who taught herself English while working two jobs that Americans can be incredibly nosy, and sometimes I genuinely think that’s part of what bothers people: they can’t understand a conversation that was never their business in the first place. 😂
