@global.intel.ltr: How much should the wealthy pay in taxes? It’s the wrong question, and Elon Musk explains why. #taxtherich #wealth #elonmusk #taxes #globalintelligenceletter
When you talk about concentrated wealth, Elon created businesses that he’s still his stockholder in. You know he owns less than 15% of Tesla? Nothings stopping any of us starting a business, continuing to invest and take risks until we are also rich on paper and employ 100,000+ Americans. What’s stopping you?

“Taxing the rich” simply doesn’t work. Tax incidence describes who is actually affected by taxation, whether it be in the second, third, or higher order. It is possible to control how much you tax, but it is impossible to control who you tax because of such higher-order effects.

If you’re honest… And you were taxing the wealthy on unrealized gains, would you extend him a rebate for the losses he just incurred? There is fair or are the poor that selfish

The top 400 pay 2% of all taxes. The top 1% pay 40% of all taxes. How much of the tax burden should they share?

I’m not sure if you’re doing this intentionally for rage bait clicks… but you’re equating two separate issues; the difficulties in accomplishing taxing the rich, and actually taxing the rich. You saying, “taxing the rich won’t work” and then describing the difficulties in attaining that mission. Taxing the rich will work, you’re only illustrating that it will be a difficult path.

So what you are saying is that they shouldn't be taxed because they have to much political power? Why is it that political power informs how taxes are paid, when the people that actually choose who's elected, pay the most taxes? So it means nothing to actually vote, because politicians will do what pays them the most. America is a scam.

Well I am in favour of taxing the rich. However I think if we are being honest and accurate Elon musk has paid $455m 2014-2018 and in 2021 between $8.3bn and $11bn. Largest tax payer in IS history.

I’ve had years where I’ve paid less than 1% of total income too. It just falls into if you are doing things that the tax code incentivizes. I also paid about 40x what I paid in federal tax in property taxes.

If we could figure out how to tax them, we would. The rich figure out how to minimize their earnings on paper. And they take loans so they don’t have to pay taxes on gains.

Under your logic, if my house gains value but I don’t sell my house, i would still pay tax. That’s just wrong. And you seem to suggest that if i take a msmecond mortgage out on my house, i should be taxed on that too. I don’t want to be taxed on gains that I did not take. Why should it be fair to tax anyone on this? Even Elon?

we could simply tax any assets that are use for collateral, treating it as income. This wouldn't have effect on lower-income people because they will normally use their paycheck as collateral. But probably we'll need a nice disaster to get their. Fortunately climate change is just around the corner.

Why would you pay tax just because your stocks happen to rise in value? Stocks go up and down. It’s obviously very different from actually getting paid, or getting dividends. It would also create a problem with the tax symmetry principle, as the IRS would then be obliged to pay you back if your stocks happen to fall.

1) Homes, Cars and toys cannot be held under the company or in a trust! They must pay taxes 2) Founders/Owners/CEO’s take a salary let’s say 3% of the company value 🤔 Pays taxes 3) Corporations tax 60%!

They should pay taxes on the value of the stock options that make up their salary. I have to pay taxes on the “imaginary value” of my home so they can do the same.

I disagree. Tax everybody proportionally. Keep money out of politics, so no leverage will be built, eliminate loopholes to use stock as collateral, regulate big tech corporations with social media exposure.
