The snow removal in NYC last winter was really quite amazing. I’ve lived in the city for 14 years and usually the response to snow has always been like this: the snow plows will come out and clear most all of the streets of snow (eventually) but what happens is that big piles of snow get left on the sidewalks at intersections everywhere. So pedestrians have to hike over these huge mounds of snow to cross the street. This year, the plows came as usual but were immediately followed up with snow removal teams and these snow melting trucks that literally cleared the intersections and adjacent sidewalks of snow. As well as clearing spaces around fire hydrants and the like. Usually, those snow piles just get packed down by people walking over them and when it warms up slightly, they turn into these pools of ice-laden water and residual snow that remain until spring. This year was incredible, the response from the city was so prompt and thorough.
