During the early 2000s, DISH Network was battling a wave of satellite TV piracy after hackers cracked its smart cards and modified receivers. Instead of simply blocking them, DISH created a hidden “Pirate TV” channel that only hacked boxes could access. The video warned viewers they were illegally intercepting satellite signals and encouraged them to stop using unauthorized equipment. The broadcast also carried electronic countermeasures (ECMs) that could disable or permanently brick hacked smart cards, making it one of the most creative anti-piracy and cybersecurity tactics ever used by a television company.
