@littleblossomdarling: did you know that whalebone is not made of bones at all? whaling began to be official criminalized in the us in the 1970s- with strict and important exceptions for indigenous peoples. ##LearnOnTikTok##fashionhistory##corset
fun (cursed) fact, baleen is made of keratin becuase they are modified hair/fur! similar to how feathers on birds are just modified scales. whales are mammals and birds are reptiles 😁

Matty / Napaaqtuq 🍉 :
ever since I learned that baleen (suqqaq in Iñupiatun) were used in corset making, I've always wondered how and why it was the chosen material. I think I was fascinated about it because, at the time, I've only seen it used for scrimshaw artwork or made into carvings.

it's crazy how widespread the use of whale product was historically, I'm currently playing a game called Dishnoured and the entire economy is based on whale based products

Victorian Hairwork :
Also used in the Victorian era as a tool for creating flat petal wirework hair flowers. ☺️(I use wood craft sticks as a substitute, since I have no whalebones. 🤷🏻♀️)

Where could I get a corset? I really like the history of it and would like to have one, but I'm unsure where to have 1, that isn't too expensive because I live in Norway, and when you have to import things, it costs double the price and I'm wondering where to get 1, that is good quality, not that Expensive and close enough to norway. Please help.one 12kr is 1 dollar

Came across some on the beach one time but couldn’t take it or touch it bc of marine mammal protections (which I’m glad exist) and it was so cool but also I wanted it so bad haha

I had no clue that “whale bone” was actually baleen and not the literal skeleton on the animal!
