@nathancollinslife.so: I called my parents on a Tuesday and said I was tired. Not tired the way anyone is tired after a long week. Tired the way you get when the thing you built has been sitting on your chest for two years and nobody around you can see it there. My mother said what mothers say. You can always come home, there is a room here, your father can ask around, nobody would think less of you. And I said nevermind, and I hung up, and I opened the laptop. That call is not what it looks like. I asked for a break and what came back was a way out. Those are two different requests, and almost nobody bothers to tell them apart out loud. A break means hold this one piece for me until Sunday. A way out means give the whole thing back and come home. So when you ask for the first and somebody hands you the second, the only thing left to say is nevermind. That answer was written for a man who wants to quit, and I was not calling to quit. Nobody in that kitchen did anything wrong, and nobody was being unkind. They answered from where they stand. From there a steady job is safety. Your own business is a risk you can put down. Watch what it does when it happens three or four times in a row, though, because that is where the damage actually lives. You stop calling. The sentence stops forming in your mouth. What is left is the work and a quiet running total of how much longer you can carry it alone. So put two words in front of the sentence before you say anything else. I need a break, not advice. I need a hand for a week, not a way out. People will hand you what you name. They cannot hand you what they had to guess at. ... Say it early, while it is still a bad month and not a bad year. The ones who wait tend to wait until asking would not have helped anyway.
