It's "stuffie" or "plushie" interchangeably for me because
1. Its shorter than "stuffed animal"
2. I also like taxidermy and it can get confusing otherwise 😆

I mostly use plushie or plush. I think it started early 2000s I think I remember neopets using that term for stuffed animals. I dont know if the rise of anime and kawaii stuffed toys had anything to do with it. I think by like 2010s it might have taken completely for what one I used.

I think there's a connotation with "stuffed animal" to mean kids toys, while "plushies" refers to a broader category that encompasses the adult audience as well as children, it would include things like bag charms and "collectible" items.

I started calling them plushies because of Neopets back in the early 2000s. I still call them plushies, but most kids call them stuffies now

It’s a mix of history and linguistics! While Americans used 'stuffed animals' for decades, the term 'plushies' exploded in the late 2000s and 2010s through internet and collector culture. It stuck because humans inherently find the '—ie' and '—y' suffixes cute; it linguistically shrinks a word (like doggy, birdie, bestie), automatically signaling to our brains that the object is small, harmless, and comforting.

plushie is a thing, stuffed animal is a title. i have tons of plushies, they’re cute and i collected them for years in middle and high school. stuffed animals are my friends who have been there for me, and who sleep on my bed with me.

I’ve seen people use “lovies” mostly in Europe! Seems like it’s more for babies and small children, but I’ve seen it transfer to comfort objects that adults have.

If it’s a character I know (say the Animaniacs or Pichu for example), it’s a plushie. If it’s a real animal (like a dog), it’s a stuffed animal

for me it was always teddy bears or teddies as a child but as i grew up it's become more and more common for them to not be bears so it felt wrong calling them bears so I sttarted using plushies instead

the first time I heard "plushie" was around 2010-ish, and at the time it was pretty much only used for anime character plushies, and after that it seems the definition expanded over time

I’ve been using the term plushy since the early 00s. It was DEFINITELY influenced by foreign media (French media where stuffed animal was translated as “animale en peluche”—lit. Stuffed plush, and anime where it was plushy). It made more sense bc that was when I encountered a lot more non-animal plushies—those “ugly dolls” were popular at the time.
