I think it’s a ratio thing and what I mean by that is like Michael Jackson is a pop artist with some R&B songs whereas safe for example Whitney Houston will be considered an R&B artist with some pop songs

I think it’s bc their main bread and butter is popular music , not R&B . Whitney and Beyoncé were introduced to the world in the R&B space and definitely Whitney and Bey pretty much stayed there , but Rihanna crossed over ALOT , just like MJ , Chris and Usher so once you do that , pop enters the convo for those artists . It’s really the last sentence you said …once the yts get A hold of the artist , they step out of that R&B box .
