I was going to say that I don't believe they would let you. it's an all or nothing when you are admitted. I keep an eye on mine and make sure I'm getting what I need. but they don't let me take long lasting insulin when I'm in the hospital. only fast acting. and that's every hospital I've ever been admitted to which is quite a few.

I actually just ran into this problem in May! The children’s hospital ER in Kansas City refused to listen to me about his insulin needs and had me turn the pump to manual mode. A few weeks later I talked to our Endo about the situation to see if I could be allowed to be in charge of his insulin in those situations. The Endo said No! She said once I take him to the ER I am handing over full care until we leave. He was sick with a stomach virus at the time so it did impact his diabetes. I would hope they would still let me if it was a broken bone situation.

I had a stroke not long ago and was hospitalized. One hospital let me manage it myself, the other tried to manage it for me…and I finally protested when I was filling my pump and the nurse documented that I took 200 units of insulin…

I would manage my child’s blood myself if it was an unrelated stay. Now if they end up DKA or something like that then they have to do the insulin and do finger stick checks every 2 hours.

Never, ever , ever give up your insulin control. I almost died from it. And the rest of the times I was doing terribly. Nope. I have been overdosed and there was no help in sight, in another hospitalization for covid they had me on IV insulin and it was going terrible and they were accusing me of sneaking food. In a locked down ward where you need codes to enter or exit, cameras above my bed and hooked to ten machines. Obviously my glucose was high from covid and bad management on their behalf, they were even forgetting to feed me cause I was the only conscious and eating person in the ward at the time. Each time I gave up my control I was high af and on November 2025 I almost died cause they massively overdosed me

I would manage it myself. It's surprising how much hospital staff does not know in regards to T1D. They'll even try to act like they know better when they clearly don't.

Every time I’ve been admitted to the hospital since diagnosis, the staff relies on me to fall work my own diabetes out they monitor my Dexcom and then tell me to treat via my pump. They document it so I’m basically doing it on my own and they’re getting credit for it!! I do not trust anyone to manage my diabetes other than myself and my son.

At 19 in the hospital to give birth, I had been doing the heavy lifting of my care since I was 10) my mom whipped out my finger sticker and was checking every 15 minutes the entire I was in labor!!!!

I would manage them myself for my kid. Because from what I’m hearing the people know absolutely nothing about T1D and often make it worse.

I would 1000% opt to take care of myself. I was in the hospital for tuberculosis and they forgot about my diabetes (gave me whack meals even though I asked for different meals), checked my sugar and then gave me insulin over an hour later (when my sugar was different) and even left a vial of insulin on my bed (which i stole and then administered myself). They forgot to hydrate me and did not continue an IV despite TB drugs being horrifically dehydrating and I ended up in DKA 5-6 days after being released from being in the hospital for 12 days for TB

I’ve been admitted at least twice where I elected to regulate mine because I found I knew my body and my reactions better, and it worked well. When you wait for administration of insulin or BG checks, sometimes they have taken a little too long (not their fault, they are obviously busy) and sometimes the insulin dose was OVER compensated

Yes I would. I had appendicitis and was admitted and i continued to manage my diabetes and this was before CGMs although I was on an insulin pumps and kept it on. Unfortunately the hospital only uses sliding scales from an inpatient standpoint type 1 or 2. Also, nurses are no trained on insulin pumps so they usually would remove it

I was hospitalized recently and I managed mine myself. It was no problem and the staff actually wanted me to show them how to do a pump change with them. I’m a nurse but I really don’t think that was a factor.

Yes. If it’s not related to T1D, I’m managing it. Also, because I’m not fully trusting a non-endo floor to manage a dang thing.

Absolutely I would, and in fact did when my daughter was admitted in March. I did have to sign a paper saying I would stay with them and wouldn’t leave but for a few minutes. They still wanted her blood sugar checked before meals but all dosing was done by me.

I taught 2 nurses while being in the hospital when I gave birth to my daughter about insulin pumps and cgm. They didn’t know much about them . I managed myself.

I ALWAYS choose to manage my own. They cut insulin in half upon arrival. They’d rather have you run a bit high than too low. No thanks. I did the same with my daughter.
