I'm a rather sentimental person and for me icons also represent the love and dedication that it took someone to create the painting. I don't just see an icon of Christ, I see generations of faithful before me, using their talents so I may be moved by faith some hundred years later.

It's also worth noting, that as Jakob takes time to become a Catechumen (if he isn't already) that this is the stage where he will be "awaiting instruction and teaching". Despite how well read he is, experiential knowledge comes with time. Why anyone is worried about Jakob's journey is beyond me. We only answer for ourselves on Judgement Day. Let the man take the season to rest and learn, and as his Priest blesses, so will he go to the far and beyond to evangelize.
