The British South Africa Company ran its own police force and full governing administration over territory that later became Rhodesia, functioning as the actual ruling authority for decades. The Hudson's Bay Company governed a massive swath of what is now Canada for roughly two centuries, administering justice and negotiating directly with Indigenous nations. The Dutch East India Company could wage war, sign treaties, and mint its own currency, and some economic historians consider it the single most valuable company ever to have existed.
