1:1 for Q1 anything is wild. My unit only does 1:1 for the absolutely most dramatic of situations. We MTP, CRRT, prone, flotrac, etc. with another patient on board

how do you handle doing bed baths for both patients while monitoring both patients? as a new grad, do you recommend starting in med-surg, or should I go straight to ICU?

I wish my doctors were right there on the floor at all times. We have four ICU’s (NTICU, CVICU, CTICU and MICU) and the critical care docs cover all 4, so they float between them all night, as well as the ER with patients who are being admitted to the ICU but haven’t left yet.

Is there a physician that stays on the unit? I’ve heard something like that, that a doctor is basically always in the ICU unit..

I work in the ICU, we still hit the code button because it calls the Drs and pharmacists, RT, and extra hands to help. Because while we can do it most of the stuff that needs done since we are all ACLS certified, it makes things smoother when we have the ICU pharmacist available to draw up meds and plenty of hands to assist. because often times there are other really sick patients that need close monitoring so we cant have all the nurses on the unit in one room.
