@emcombsfitness: 21g of protein?! Butttt there’s a catch ⬇️ Now at first glance (just like it’s designed because food packaging is trying to SELL) this protein pudding looks impressive. But this is why it’s so important to have an understanding of how to read a nutrition label. Out of the 21g of protein, 12.2g of that is collagen. When we’re talking about protein for muscle growth and recovery, it’s about more than just the total grams, it’s about the quality and the essential amino acids and leucine required to stimulate protein synthesis. And collagen is VERY different from proteins such as whey, milk, eggs, meat etc. Collagen is rich in glycine and proline, but relatively low in essential amino acids and leucine, and it completely lacks the essential amino acid tryptophan. Because of this, collagen is classified as an incomplete protein and hydrolysed collagen scores 0 on measures such as PDCAAS/DIAAS. Studies have literally compared 30g whey vs 30g collagen after resistance exercise. Whey produced a substantially greater rise in circulating leucine and essential amino acids, and whey significantly increased myofibrillar muscle protein synthesis compared with placebo andddd collagen did not. More recently, a randomised controlled trial in older adults found that adding 50g/day of whey or pea protein increased integrated muscle protein synthesis, while the same amount of collagen did not. Technically, yes this product contains 21g of protein. But the giant “21g PROTEIN” on the front doesn’t tell the average consumer that more than half of that number is collagen. If I picked this up specifically because I wanted a convenient 20g+ high-quality protein snack, I’d want to know that. This is also why I don’t want you obsessing over protein numbers without looking at where that protein is actually coming from. Because 21g of protein on one label isn’t necessarily nutritionally equivalent to 21g of protein on another. #nutritionist #foodtiktok #protein #proteinsnack #nutritiontips

The calories and macros don't add up on this either, like the actual calories are ~164 because 4cal/g for protein/carbs and 9 fat. So is the label incorrect? 🤷🏾
