i went to scotland in august and lemme just saw more sweaters than you think. you’ll be tired of wearing the same 2. cashmere/wool sweaters that are warmer are better! rain jacket is essential

ok I'm from Scotland but live in CT now. September usually is fall like there, it's wet all year. You need a rain jacket. A fold up puffer I always take with me all year, it can be windy and the rain makes it feel colder, Patagonia for both of those are the best I ever had but pricey if you won't use them after, Uniqlo makes an awesome puffer jacket that folds uo. I like a cardigan as a layer, I love merino wool for that. waterproof shoes for the highlands are good but sneakers for the city, lots of walking, especially in Edinburgh lots of steps. A bag to hold your layers and jackets when you get too hot. I like a baseball cap for the rain. Make sure you eat square slice sausage and potato scone on a roll with HP sauce and get an Irn Bru to drink. Try and go to Glasgow, great architecture, free museums, good nightlife and friendly people. 🥰

Listen. Pack one outfit and thrift it all there. Wool, rain coats, pants etc. soo cheap at thrift stores and much much much better quality.

LAYERS! I was in the highlands last year mid-September. It was so humid I only wore tshirts, my unlined raincoat, and jeans or leggings. My sweaters never left my suitcase. I only put on a cardigan after the sun went down. I actually ended up going on a side quest to buy more tshirts halfway through my two weeks in Scotland.

Live here - layers, and a raincoat ideally- it tends to be windy so umbrellas aren’t super helpful. It really doesn’t get that cold in my opinion especially with the humidity. I only have been wearing light jackets even in the highlands this time of year.

Lots of layers. Comfortable waterproof shoes. One or two cute outfits for dinners, but nothing over the top. Scotland is very casual. The rain comes from every direction, so plan for practicality. I lived in my waterproof down coat the whole time.

Just got back. FYI washcloths are considered personal items and are not provided by most hotels or b&bs. Also, worth booking a 3 day Isle of Skye Tour with Rabbie's instead of driving it yourself. The guides know all the spots so they will maximize your time no matter the weather.

Scotland is the same climate as Washington. A little rainy and gloomy But not freezing. I brought so many clothes when I went in September and just ended up wearing the same jeans and black tee most of the trip. The key is layers so I also had a puffer jacket that was water resistant that i carried when I was warm. I had basic black lace up Doc Martin style boots that I got from Walmart 😂 and when in doubt… primark is an awesome department store.

Blundstones. I’ve never seen weather change so fast anywhere and they ended up being the only shoe I wore the entire trip. Hiked in them in the pouring rain and wore around edinburgh and all through the highlands. Bought them the day before I went and SO glad I did!

honestly layer it up. If you’ve ever backpacked, i actually recommend following similar guidelines when packing for Scotland in fall. Wear wool base layers, too. They can be reworn a few times before getting gross and they work for regulating your temp. Most importantly, make sure your feet stay dry! Have fun, it’s the most beautiful place in the whole world.

Just spent 2 weeks in the highlands. Waterproof- not resistant- pants. If you get some straight cut ones they will look good with anything. I took multiple pairs of different ones and literally only wore my Craghoppers that I bought the first day.

We went to Ireland 2 years ago and not sure how different it is from Scotland, but we overpacked for sure. Things we used for sure were jackets/rain jackets, hiking boots, runnings shoes, and I brought one pair of heels for a nice dinner. A few sweaters, t shirts and long sleeves. One moment it will be nice and sunny, the next cloudy and raining, and back to sunny. Loved Ireland so much that we’re going back this September and throwing in Scotland for a few days as well! We plan on going to Edinburgh, Glencoe and Inverness. We’re packing the same things we did for Ireland, but not overpacking this time. Enjoy your trip!
