Residents confronted Mississippi’s Republican-led redistricting committee over its push to consider new legislative, judicial and congressional maps. Speakers called the effort racist, described it as a political power grab and accused state leaders of trying to uphold the Confederacy by weakening Black voting power. The push follows a U.S. Supreme Court decision that weakened federal protections for districts created to give Black voters a fair opportunity to elect their preferred candidates. The ruling does not require Mississippi to redraw its maps, but Republican leaders are moving forward with the process anyway. With Black residents making up nearly 40 percent of Mississippi, voters warned that changing the lines could divide communities and eliminate districts where Black voices have meaningful political power.
