Not every relationship gives you immediate access. Especially mentorship. Because someone has agreed to mentor them, they begin speaking to them as though the relationship has already reached a level of intimacy that hasn’t been established. They cross boundaries. They make assumptions. They demand access. They confuse proximity with permission. And somewhere along the way, honour gets lost. But if someone is mentoring you, don’t rush the relationship. Observe. Listen. Learn. Pay attention to what they value. Pay attention to what they protect. Pay attention to the boundaries they have established. And most importantly, respect them. You don’t have to force your way into someone’s inner circle. Let your character speak. Let your consistency speak. Let your sincerity speak. Let your results speak. Because sometimes the greatest test of a relationship is not how close you can get. It’s how well you handle the distance. Can you respect a boundary without becoming offended? Can you receive correction without becoming defensive? Can you remain committed even when you don’t have constant access? Can you honour someone when they have nothing immediate to offer you? That’s where authenticity reveals itself. A mentor doesn’t owe you unlimited access simply because they agreed to guide you. And you don’t have to become someone you’re not to earn their respect. You earn trust by being trustworthy. You earn deeper access by demonstrating that you can be trusted with the access you’ve already been given. Over time, the relationship may evolve. The conversation may become deeper. The access may become wider. The relationship may become more personal. But let that happen naturally. Don’t force intimacy that hasn’t been invited. There is wisdom in understanding that every relationship has a door. Honour is knowing when to knock. Respect is knowing when to wait. Character is knowing what to do once the door opens. And maturity is knowing that sometimes… the door is not yours to open. Build relationships with honour. Protect trust. Respect boundaries.
