Slowly, with a tenderness she hadn't shown in nearly a year, Jennie reached out and began to apply the medication to Lisa's burned skin. ​Lisa let out a soft, involuntary hiss at the initial touch, her muscles tensing. ​"I’m sorry," Jennie whispered, her voice thick with sudden emotion. She blew gently on the burn to cool it, her breath tickling Lisa's skin. "I'll be gentler." ​As Jennie meticulously smoothed the cream over the raw skin, the silence between them grew heavy, charged with a familiar intimacy. Lisa looked down at Jennie’s bowed head, watching the way her dark hair fell over her shoulders. Being this close, Lisa could smell the faint, expensive floral scent of Jennie’s perfume mixed with the warm aroma of the breakfast she had just cooked. ​Jennie kept her eyes focused on her task, but her fingers were trembling slightly. The guilt of ignoring the hospital call, combined with the raw vulnerability of seeing Lisa like this, made her chest ache.
