@deeploneliness_: There’s a point where you realize you don’t want to spend the rest of your relationship teaching someone how to protect it. You don’t want to keep explaining why openly lusting over other people hurts, why certain interactions feel disrespectful, or why being made to feel like you’re constantly competing for your own partner’s attention slowly destroys the way you see yourself. You wanted them to choose you—not because you monitored them, argued them into it, or made enough rules that they eventually had no other option, but because being with you made them want to protect what you had. And eventually, if someone keeps showing you that they want the freedom to behave like they’re single, maybe the most loving thing you can do is stop standing between them and that freedom. Not as punishment. Not because you’re hoping leaving will finally scare them into changing. But because you shouldn’t have to become controlling just to make a relationship feel respectful. Of course, attraction to other people doesn’t magically disappear when someone enters a relationship, and couples can have different boundaries around social media, friendships, and what they consider inappropriate. That’s why those expectations need honest conversations rather than assumptions. But once you’ve clearly communicated what hurts you, the other person’s choices tell you whether your values actually align. You can’t spend forever begging someone to voluntarily become the partner you need. So maybe my final act of love isn’t fighting harder. Maybe it’s stepping aside and saying: if that’s genuinely the life you want, you’re free to live it. I just won’t keep hurting myself trying to convince you that what we had should matter more.
