Her mother immediately noticed something was wrong. “What happened?” Engfa sat down. “I need to tell you something.” Her father looked at her. “What is it?” Engfa took a deep breath. “I want to become Charlotte's donor.” Silence. Her mother's face changed. “Engfa…” “I know what you're thinking.” “No.” Her mother shook her head. “You don't understand what this means.” “I do.” “You could permanently lose your sight.” Engfa looked down. “I know.” Her father stood up. “Why would you do this to yourself?” Engfa's eyes filled with tears. “Because I can't watch her live in darkness when I might be able to help her.” Her mother began crying. “You're our daughter.” “I know.” “You're asking us to watch you give up your sight.” Engfa walked toward her mother and held her. “I'm not asking you to agree immediately.” She whispered: “I'm asking you to understand why I have to try.” Her father looked away. His eyes were filled with tears. He finally whispered, “And if Charlotte asks who the donor is?” Engfa shook her head. “She must never know.” Her parents looked at her in disbelief. “Why?” “Because if she knows, she'll spend the rest of her life feeling guilty.” Engfa wiped her tears. “I don't want her to love me because I sacrificed something for her.” She looked toward the window. “I want her to live.” The next morning, Engfa returned to the hospital. Charlotte was still unconscious. Engfa sat beside her and gently held her hand. “You don't know what I'm planning.” She smiled sadly. “And I don't want you to know.” She leaned closer. “I just want you to wake up.” A tear fell onto their joined hands. “When you open your eyes again…” Engfa whispered, “I want you to see the world.” She kissed Charlotte's hand. “And if I have to give you my light…” She closed her eyes. “I will.” Because loving Charlotte had never been about what Engfa could receive. It had always been about what she was willing to give.
