Place of Changing Winds is one of the most fascinating new vineyard projects in Australia, a tiny, extremely high density site tucked into the southern foothills of Mount Macedon in Victoria’s cool climate Macedon Ranges. The project was founded by longtime wine importer and buyer Robert Walters, who spent nearly five years searching for the right piece of land. In 2011, he and his partner Kate Millard found a rocky, forest-surrounded property in Bullengarook, sitting around 500 meters above sea level between Mount Macedon and Mount Bullengarook. The site was historically known as Warekilla, a local Wurundjeri name meaning “Place of Changing Winds.” They began planting in 2012 with a pretty radical idea: take inspiration from some of the great vineyards of Europe and push high density viticulture to its limits in Australia. Today, there are nearly 45,000 vines packed into just 3.1 hectares, with some sections reaching 33,000 vines per hectare. For comparison, even Burgundy’s traditionally high density vineyards are generally planted around 10,000 vines per hectare. The vineyard is focused primarily on Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, planted across ancient, rocky soils of quartz, sandstone and quartzite. The farming is incredibly labor intensive, with no synthetic chemicals and extremely low yields per vine. The idea behind all of this density is to create competition between the vines, encouraging deeper root systems and producing fewer, smaller bunches with the goal of expressing the site as clearly as possible. Today we’re opening their 2023 “Between Two Mountains” Pinot Noir, named for the vineyard’s position between Mount Macedon and Mount Bullengarook.
