@suhaadada: AI evangelists lack an understanding of (and regard for) human behavior. That’s why their predictions are wrong and why this situational awareness drama can unfold. This is the singular trait that made Amazon successful. #amazon #jeffbezos #ai #Tech #news
I’ve been thinking about this a lot as well— The AI leaders who are scientists focus on future societal benefits (Demis, Dario) like curing cancer and assume the everyday person will appreciate the outcome of that. Sam Altman, Sundar, and Mark talk about “personal intelligence” and that intelligence will make people more capable than they are today. In theory, this seems valuable but also kinda of assumes the average person is regularly faced with capability related challenges….and I think that might be a fundamental misreading of every day problems. I’m not sure if Jeff Bezos was good at predicting the future or rather the US has become increasingly unaffordable (and maybe he knew that would be the case?) and so his value prop continues to be increasingly relevant. Imagine a world where people didn’t need to work…the value prob of Amazon would be much less appealing.

It feels like the b2b saas-ification of the tech industry has made tech people emphasize so hard on selling the shovels to the gold rush they stopped looking at whether there is a gold rush at all

This is regular font, not sarcasm… what’s your background? Your viewpoint is so sharp, smart… and your delivery is exceptional. Like you can untangle the messy, random, fleeting thoughts about all this. You’re very impressive. (Also, I swear, not a creep. 50 year old lady in Maine just stoked to stumble across a young woman like you)

I’m curious if you think it’s because enterprise is the “more profitable” play for AI? If every job comes to rely on AI, the enterprise play doesn’t NEED to sell customer obsession, or people’s needs being met, as long as productivity gains are increasing. Remember early this year when every company announced layoffs due to AI and their stock would go up? Thus rewarding companies for touting said productivity gains. I wholeheartedly agree with you that AI and eventual AGI cannot get mainstream CONSUMER adoption until it focuses in solving more universal human problems.

Interesting thesis! The one thing though is Amazon is a customer business, bringing disruption through the internet, whereas AI is a cost-saving/labor disruption, the benefits of which accrue to enterprises. Enterprises are the customers. We’re not.

But…Leopold was absolutely correct in his investment thesis. He was over-levered and didn’t manage volatility. Doesn’t make his overall thesis wrong in any way.

A brilliant insight. The idea that you can imagine Amazon from the start is absurd. Instead, most companies don't become what the founder first thought it would become. They learn what their company is by solving problems and exploring what arises from those challenges.

Conviction is a more valuable trait in a CEO than an investor. Hedge funds don’t have their hands on the steering wheel. They can’t much affect the success of their bets, just react to how it does or doesn’t pan out.

Agree but I think the reason companies are focused on corporations right now is actually a lot more boring than this. Right now a lot of it is driven by the fact that AI development is expensive and corporations are the ones who can pay so their problems will be solved first.

NO. Jeff Bezos understood early that Amazon was spending heavily on data storage, similar to AI today, and he recognized that data storage itself could become a business. That became AWS. Today, Amazon sells hundreds of billions of dollars’ worth of products, but AWS is the company’s biggest profit engines. In 2025, AWS generated more operating income than Amazon’s entire North American segment.

I am a customer now who boycotts Amazon for companies with better after-sales-service, higher price and slower delivery. Bezos changed me from a homo economicus to a homo boycottus.
