Apparently me buying a coffee was bankrupting our family, but he could buy a coffee. I’ll never forget when I heard my youngest son parroting him when we were on vacation visiting family without dad and I stopped to grab a coffee.

I was in control of the finances from day 1 (eldest daughter/ an 80s divorce child / control issues?) BUT I see this very very often over my decades. How can we teach younger women to never do this? I started with deconstructing marriage as a contract and tellng every young woman, my own included, that this contract is simple to sign, difficult to get out of. Do not sell yourself short at the altar for love while he's "buying" his laborer for the next 20 years.

he stopped calling it "our" money and it became "his" money. he started monitoring everything I bought which was usually household needs and bills. I had to account for everything but he would buy ridiculous stuff, for example expensive vinal records and we don't have a working record player. and he could buy lunch or coffee, but if I needed to get food for my child and I...oh I was ruining the savings and how could I ever expect to start a retirement account when I do that. he moved money recently into an account that I have no access to. it happened over time and while I was pouring everything into our family while managing a serious chronic illness, and now I feel like I've been surviving for so long that I never realized the mistakes I was making and the cage being built around me.

He was constantly coming up short on bills, but I never knew why. He made more than me. He wanted to combine bc I knew how to save money. & he wanted to spend it so I had nothing left. I never combined, he would get SO MAD when I would say “it’s not a good idea” . Thank goodness I didn’t. I left 1/2026❤️BUT NOWWWWWWW he doesn’t contribute a dollar to his 2 children with me. Not a dollar since I left. Just his way to try to control me & get me to come back. It’s not happening this time🥰🥰 I will 100% work 6 days a week just to be free from him.

I’ve been married for 34 years. My husband has always controlled the money. Recently I came home from the store and found out the cashier put two items I didn’t ask for in my bag. I made the comment “I hope I didn’t pay for that”. It came to $15. He said I cost HIM money because he pays for it. I told him that was an assholish thing to say. He said I’m not responsible because I didn’t pay attention. I told him I’m so sick of how he treats me. He yelled at me to leave. Then he said he pays for my car so don’t take it. That made me so mad and I’m so tired of this.
