I traveled to South Korea to visit my daughter after she married a Korean man—and while I was there, I overheard her husband arguing with his father in Korean. They had no idea I understood every word. My daughter, Emily, had moved to South Korea several years earlier for work. That was where she met Joon. They fell in love quickly, and before long, they were married. From the beginning, Joon always spoke English around me. When I first met him, I liked him immediately. He seemed thoughtful, respectful, and completely devoted to Emily. He treated her well, paid attention to the little things, and clearly cared about making her happy. What neither of them knew was that I had started learning Korean after Emily got married. I had never mentioned it to anyone. I simply studied quietly whenever I had free time because I wanted to understand more of the world my daughter had chosen to live in. I wasn’t fluent. But I understood far more than Joon realized. And when I heard Young-ho’s next sentence, I froze in the doorway. “Oh my God,” he said in Korean. “How much longer are you planning to hide this from Emily? You don’t deserve her. You’re bringing shame on this family.” My stomach tightened. Joon immediately answered. “Stay out of it. You know why I married her. You know exactly what I need. Nobody can ever find out.” I stopped breathing for a second. Why he married her? What did he need? Young-ho leaned closer. “If Emily or her mother learns what you’ve done, you’re going to have a serious problem.” Joon’s voice dropped. “Yes, I know they’ll hate me. I know that I…” Then he continued. And what I heard next made my knees feel weak. Whatever secret my son-in-law had been hiding wasn’t something small. It was something involving my daughter. Something he believed could destroy the way she saw him. I felt sick. Before either man realized I had been listening, I quietly backed away from the doorway. Then I grabbed my phone and rushed outside. I didn’t even stop to put on proper shoes. I was standing outside in my slippers, hands shaking, already searching for Emily’s number.
