Joseph James Tombura جوزيف جيمس طمبرة He was a South Sudanese civil servant, teacher, engineer, and politician. He was born in 1929 in Wau, Western Bahr el Ghazal State. He attended primary school at Bussere Elementary School in Wau and completed secondary school at Kampala Senior Technical School. He received his university degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Khartoum Technical Institute in 1954. He went on to graduate studies and obtained an advanced diploma in engineering in 1957 from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, USA. He returned to Sudan from the USA and worked in public service as a teacher for more than twenty years. In 1970, he was appointed General Manager of the Fruit and Vegetable Canning Factory in Wau. He joined politics in the mid-1970s, and he was appointed Commissioner of Bahr el Ghazal Province. In 1978, he won the election as an MP in Juba, representing the cooperative of Western Equatoria. In 1982, he became the fifth president of the High Executive Council of the Southern Sudan Autonomous Region. In 1983, he resigned as president of the autonomous regional government in Juba and led the government of Equatoria Province from 1983 to 1985. Many South Sudanese intellectuals blame Joseph James Tombura as the master of (Kokora), a political division that divided the Southern Sudan region into three regions. His critics argue that President Gafar Nimeri had used Tombura to divide the Southerners and end the Addis Ababa Peace Agreement of 1972. Tombura died in Khartoum, Sudan, on September 17, 1992. Honourable Joseph James Tombura was a political icon in the history of South Sudan's politics.
