Meet Sammy! My sweet, loyal, and loving 10-year-old Shih Tzu/Bichon Frise. When we first brought him home, we named him after Samwise Gamgee, the loyal and steadfast companion from The Lord of the Rings. Over the past 10 years, he has truly lived up to his name, faithfully staying by my side through some of the hardest years of my life. Sammy is sweet, protective, caring, and incredibly devoted. He has been my constant companion through so much, and now he is the one who needs me. Sammy is in heart failure and has a suspected blood clot obstructing the vein leading to his heart. His veterinarians are also concerned that the obstruction could be caused by a tumor or another abnormality involving his adrenal gland. Depending on what they find, the affected adrenal gland may also need to be surgically removed (adrenalectomy) as part of his treatment. Sammy has also had fluid repeatedly accumulate in his abdomen, requiring several procedures to remove it and may need more. He is currently taking Furosemide, Vetmedin, and Clopidogrel to help manage his heart failure and reduce the risk of additional clotting. The specialty animal hospital where his visit is scheduled is six hours away, and Sammy is expected to stay at the hospital for at least two days while the CT, evaluation, and necessary surgery are performed. His veterinarians believe that surgery is his best chance of overcoming this life-threatening obstruction and giving him more time with us. We are doing everything we can to keep him stable and get him to the specialists on September 8th, 2026. The hospital has not been able to give us an exact cost because the CT scan will determine exactly what procedures Sammy will need. We have been told to expect approximately $7,000–$9,000, possibly more. This will cover his CT scan, surgery, hospitalization, fluid removal, medications, and additional care. I am a disabled veteran living with stage 4 breast cancer, so an unexpected veterinary expense of this size is more than I can manage on my own. Asking for help is difficult, but Sammy has spent the last 10 years standing beside me through every difficult moment. Now it is my turn to stand beside him.
