POV: The family dinner is loud enough that nobody should notice the way Beau keeps looking at you from across the table. Nobody except you. Every time your eyes meet, there’s that barely-there smile. A little too knowing. A little too warm for your father’s best friend. You try to ignore it. You really do. Until Beau’s phone buzzes beside his glass. His eyes drop to the screen. And something changes. The faint smile disappears as he turns the phone face down. You tilt your head. “Who was that?” Beau looks at you. — “Just a text.” “From who?” His eyebrow lifts, amusement flickering in his eyes. “Why? You keeping tabs on me now?” You roll your eyes. “Not at all.” “Could’ve fooled me.” He gives you that slow, infuriating smile before turning back toward the conversation. But you notice he doesn’t answer. And suddenly, you’re painfully aware of how much that bothers you. A few minutes later, another vibration comes from his pocket. This time, Beau checks it, a faint smile spreading across his face. Your stomach twists. Someone is texting him… Someone he clearly doesn’t want anyone to know about. And, for reasons you refuse to examine, jealousy burns beneath your skin. Later, you find yourself alone with him in the hallway. “You’re hiding something.” Beau leans casually against the wall, arms folding across his chest. “Am I?” “Yes.” His eyes move slowly over your face. “And why does that bother you so much?” You hesitate. — “It doesn’t.” He steps closer. “Liar.” Your breath catches. “….Fine….Who is she?” For a moment, Beau says nothing. Then that familiar smirk pulls at the corner of his mouth. “Why?… Jealous?” You glare at him, rolling your eyes. “No.” He leans closer, lowering his voice. “Then you shouldn’t care who’s texting me.” His eyes hold yours. And suddenly, neither of you is smiling. Because you both know exactly why you care. “You’re enjoying this way too much,” you mutter. Beau’s smile deepens. “Maybe a little.” You fold your arms, trying desperately to look unaffected, but he’s watching you too closely. “Fine. Keep your secrets.” You turn to walk away. His hand catches your wrist—not hard, just enough to stop you. “Hey.” You glance back at him. For the first time tonight, the teasing disappears from his expression. “It’s not what you think.” “Then why don’t you tell me who it is?” He studies you for a long moment. “You really want to know?” You nod. Beau steps closer, lowering his voice so nobody in the next room can hear. “It’s someone I’m not supposed to be talking to.” Your heart sinks. “Really?” His eyes flick toward the kitchen before returning to yours. “Because your father would probably put a bullet in me if he knew.” You swallow. “Who is she?” Beau’s mouth twitches. “You.” Your entire body stills. “What?” He pulls his phone from his pocket and turns the screen toward you. Your name is there. The message you sent him earlier is open. Beau watches your reaction with quiet amusement. “You really thought I was hiding another woman?” You stare at him. “I can’t believe you.” — “Why did you do that?” “Darling, the look on your face. Priceless.” “Beau…” He chuckles softly. “Besides, watching you get jealous… turned me on,” he laughs, his voice dropping as he steps closer. “And babe, keeping this a secret is more than enough for one man to handle.” His eyes linger on yours for a moment too long. “Especially when every time I look at you, I have to pretend there’s nothing going on.” Your eyes narrow. “You’re an asshole.” “Probably.” His gaze drops briefly to your lips before meeting your eyes again. “But I’m your asshole tonight.” From the kitchen, your father suddenly calls his name. Beau takes one slow step backward. “Coming.” Then he looks at you one last time. That same secret smile. “Try not to look so jealous, sweetheart.”
