HELLO TIKTOK FRIENDS! 💚🌳 I’m sorry I haven’t been here for aaaages - I’m better on the other app and always forget to post here 😬 But… I’m going to try and turn it around! 🙌 Anyway let’s really delve into how to forage oyster mushrooms safely, so you can be confident in foraging a few when you find your own! 😍 You’re looking for overlapping clusters on dead or dying deciduous wood, often from late autumn through early spring. Grey to beige fan shaped caps. White gills running down the stem (known as decurrent gills). A short or absent stem, curving into the wood. And if you’d like to take a spore print to be sure, the spores are white to pale lilac in colour. Grey oysters (Pleurotus ostreatus) are one of the safest winter mushrooms to forage because they really don’t have any lookalikes. I’ve shown the closest in this video and as you can see, they really aren't very close at all! The main things to stay super safe are to avoid all white oyster looking mushrooms as they could be angels wings (Pleurocybella porrigens) and to make sure the caps are at least 5cm across because little oyster like mushrooms (known as oysterlings) aren’t always edible. More information on angel wings: Angel wings used to be considered edible and in some parts of the world, they still are! However, there have been illnesses and even deaths linked to this mushroom (specifically, in 2024 in Japan over 50 people were poisoned from these mushrooms 17 died. Interestingly, almost all of these people were older and had compromised liver function. Various studies have been done on the mushroom but we’re still not exactly sure why this happened or what exactly in the mushroom made it toxic in this case), so I think it’s best to err on the side of caution here and advise you to avoid them. For this video, we’re just focusing on the grey oyster, also sometimes called the winter oyster. But there is also a summer oyster, with a paler cap, which is also delicious and edible! RIGHT, I think that’s it for the facts! Any questions, drop them in the comments! 🥰🙌
