To everyone saying that the game is too bright, just as a reminder it is extremely common for most games and even monitors to have a brightness setting. If the game is too bright then turn it down.

I suggest adding a little initial velocity to particles and debris when it breaks, from the center of the emitter outward. A slight hitstop when you do hit a rock (freezing the pickaxe's swing animation for like 20 ms at 75% of its course) would also greatly improve game feel at no cost. There are lots of tiny tricks that can improve game feel! you can also generate a very shortlived, short ranged , quite bright light source upon impact.
