Standing on the rim of Aogashima's double caldera, a remote island in the Pacific that belongs to Tokyo Metropolis. ✨ This is not a movie set volcano. Aogashima is a double-structured volcano rising over 1,100 meters from the seafloor, with a smaller cone called Maruyama growing inside the main crater. As of 2024, just 162 people in 113 households live here, making it Japan's smallest municipality by population, and everyone lives on high ground above 100 meters for safety. Rough seas and fog cancel the ferry and helicopter so often that reaching the island at all is part of its reputation.
