I'm Japanese living in Australia. The reason they don't have thier passport is that because of the weak yen and rising cost of living, while wages aren’t keeping up, they can’t really afford to travel overseas.

They have only 10 days of holiday per year and it's considered rude to take them all at once. Work culture is extremely toxic in Japan. Plus in 10 days you don't really have the opportunity to adjust to jet lag and traveling 20+ hours become impossible. Also the fact that prices and rent is going up while salaries don't follow the same curve. Yen is loosing its value as well. More and more people are unemployed and replaced by robots, AI or automation. That's why. I could go on but I'm just getting tired by now...

i don't think they are worried with your first reason. they do want to travel. it was common seeing them everywhere just decades ago when their currency was strong. they especially liked europe. now, they could barely afford going to us in southeast asia. 🥲

I think even before the weak yen they were already like that. From non-Japanese YouTubers who live there, there’s already so much to do within Japan.

When I was a kid in the 90s, every major attraction I saw in Canada and the US was filled with Japanese tourists. From my perspective, it seems like a generational decline since the 2000s.

For me if I want to travel abroad I want to go somewhere better than where I live and see different things and say "wow that's amazing".So from what I know Japan is safe,clean so Japanese may think why bother going abroad where life can be dangerous for them and the different lifestyle might be quite annoying.

i'm japanese. the bottom line is, there just aren't any nearby countries i want to visit. europe and north america are too far, and it's hard to take enough paid time off. that's it!

Menurutku karena mereka gk bisa bahasa Inggris, jd mereka takut keluar negeri, sekalipun ada pasti lebih banyak yg ikutnya tour guide drpd solo trip, tp balik lg lebih banyak tempat wisata di jepang yg bisa di kunjungi, karena mereka merasa lebih aman dan lebih lega liburan di negara sendiri jd mereka lebih milih liburan domestik
