Remember when the estate tax (inheritance tax) was introduced? Of course you don’t - none of us do because it happened long before we were born. It originally targeted only the most wealthy - so of course was popular with those that weren’t affected. Then they simply kept the threshold the same for many many years. So long that the original reason for it passed out of memory. Now thanks to inflation ordinary people find themselves affected by a tax originally supposed to target the richest. The threshold for this tax isn’t even relatively high. Inflation will bring more and more households into its grasp pretty quickly. Same formula - sell a tax as targeting the wealthy - wait 20 years and it’s hitting the working classes too.
