I love when movies have accurate psychological concepts in them. There’s so much pop psych injected into everything these days, and seeing movies and shows that clearly understand important psychological theories or principals are refreshing. Inside Out is honestly one of the most accurate movies when it comes to labeling and understanding our emotions and personality. It includes concepts like mixed feelings, “core memories/emotions”, the importance of processing emotions, and the importance of feeling safe and secure in our attachments, and how that lays the groundwork for a healthy self-concept. I’ve recommended this movie to countless people I see in therapy because it has things we can all learn from, parents and children alike. Movies make psychology accessible to us. Not everyone has the motivation or interest to pick up a book that can be dense or perhaps not the most enjoyable read. But well-written movies can take complex concepts, and put them into a situation that we’ve all been in or witnessed before, with some added context and teachings. I actually find Pixar movies are pretty clever with how they weave in mature psychological concepts in easy to absorb ways. I plan to make this a regular thing where I’ll try to highlight a few important take-home points from popular movies or shows that depict accurate psychology to make it a bit more digestible to people. Follow along for more :) #psychologist #moviesaretherapy #psychology #movies #insideout
