@powers_plants: Ruby throated hummingbirds, migrate north and they arrive at the same time as the eastern red columbine plant is blooming! Eastern red columbine has tubular shaped flowers, which are ideal for hummingbirds to drink nectar from. It has a huge native range throughout the migratory path of the hummingbird. I can’t get mine to bloom. What am I doing wrong? Also, I hear the cicadas in the background and I’m in Evanston this weekend - same sound in my ear!

Yes! native columbine for spring and Cardinal Flower for summer bloom. I also plant Black and Blue salvia and red salvia annuals for continual bloom until hard frost. I never have to hang hummingbird feeders.

I have this all during it! Them I have agastache and beards tongue they like and then ending with cardinal plants. I have two that come all the time.
I let my Columbine spread everywhere, all of them lol. I take the seed pods and reseed where the plant is and then spread them where I want.

I have columbine everywhere and the hummingbirds LOVE them!! I have some catnip in a pot I grow to dry for my indoor cat. I saw a hummingbird going wild for it today! He was REALLY working it! That’s a first for me.

First year with it. I have four in a bed among many other plants. Let me tell you, the spread is REAL.

I’ve had this plant for 20 years. Never had any problems with it. Mostly shade is where it’s grown. I love it.

Such a delicate looking, lovely plant. I treasure each one, and cross my fingers that some will escape the Deer.

I had a hummingbird feeder for like a minute. It was a nuisance to keep clean and filled, so I started planting the plants they love. Voila. A garden full of hummingbirds and no work for Lazy Lynnie
