Singaporeans are pragmatic. If there is little weightage on Mother Tongue in school, they will sacrifice it for the bigger picture. Only by increasing weightage then they will put in more efforts.

let Singaporean strengthen their own mother tongue, do not force Malays learning to the other non malays' 3 Races. let Chinese do better in Chinese & their own Dialect. let young Indians strengthen their own Tamil. let European race Singaporean learn whatever Language their own Grandparents were from (eg German, French, Russian...), then Malays can choose Malays as their First Language.... do not force other races to learn Malays. our kids are having hard times learning so many subjects in school, and their own hobbies like Piano, Art, swimming, chess... now you want to force them to take out time to learn Malay, when our grandparents are murmuring they don't understand cantonese, Hokkien, Teochew? let us encourage our kids to strengthen our Mother tongue. make learning mandarin and mother tongue a delightful experience. do not force young people to learn Malay, it will back fired. I have enough of Malaysia Chinese laugh at Singapore chinese' fluency in Mandarin. Lets be truly Racial Harmony & Religious harmony. by not forcing one Race culture on the other 3 races. also at fhe same time be tolerance and stop calling The early Chinese who came as Just immigrants and not Real locals. Mr Wong is right, its not about the root country we came from or the color of our skin, or what race we are to must return back to our own race..., but about how committed we are to this Place we call Home, that we want to settle here, build lives together, never thinking of leaving, no matter how hard lives are. "When there are troubles to go through, We'll find a way to start anew There is comfort in the knowledge That home's about its people too" this is Home Truly. Majulah Singapura.
