Every mind you’ve ever encountered, including your own, is downstream of something that isn’t itself a mind at all. It’s the reason minds happen. This distinction sounds abstract until you sit with what it’s actually protecting against. It’s easy to imagine God as the biggest, most powerful version of the things we already know, an infinite mind, a supreme intelligence, a source of ultimate light. Hermetic thought refuses that move entirely. God isn’t the greatest instance of mind. God is what makes the category of mind possible to begin with, standing outside it the way a source stands outside its own effects. Confuse the two and you’ve reduced the infinite to a bigger version of something finite. This is a genuinely difficult thing to hold, because language itself resists it. Every word available describes qualities, things, attributes, and the moment you name God as anything, mind, light, spirit, you’ve quietly turned the source into one more item in the category it was supposed to generate. Hermetic apophatic theology, the tradition of defining God by what God is not, exists precisely because positive description keeps accidentally shrinking the thing it’s trying to honor. There’s something practically useful buried in this seemingly abstract distinction. If God is the cause of mind rather than a bigger mind, then reaching toward the divine was never going to be an act of thinking harder. Thought is downstream of the thing being sought, not a vehicle capable of reaching upstream to find it. Something other than thinking is required, closer to unknowing than to comprehension.
